Platelet Rich Plasma Now at The Institute of Anti-Aging
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical therapeutic option for the restoration of thinning hair and hair loss. PRP is a safe treatment that uses the body’s own platelets to revitalize the hair shaft and promote hair regrowth. While PRP is not a cure for baldness also known as androgenic alopecia, evidence supports this to be a promising treatment to restore hair growth in both men and women.
Currently in the U.S., there are 35 million men and 21 million women experiencing hair loss. By the age of 35, 40% of men have noticeable hair loss. And by age of 60, 80% of women have noticeable hair loss. PRP treatment uses the patient’s own blood platelets to revitalize the hair shaft and promote regrowth.
Platelets contain growth factors which help tissue regenerate and regrow healthier, stronger tissue. Growth factors in the platelets work to reverse the miniaturization of the hair follicle and stimulate the hair back into a growth phase. Hair shafts get healthier which enables hair to regrow.
How PRP Works
Platelets are naturally very rich in healing properties. Blood is made up of 93% red cells, 6% white blood cells and 1% platelets. By concentrating the healing properties of the platelets into the tissue, the tissue area gets a boost and starts to heal and regrow. Platelets initiate the tissue repair and attract stem cells that speed up the body’s natural healing process. In the follicle this creates a healthier, thicker hair shaft.
What is the Process
The PRP treatment is done in three easy steps. The first step is to draw a small amount of the patients blood. Step two is to place the blood in a centrifuge and spin it down so the platelets are concentrated. Step three is to take this concentration of platelets and inject them with a small needle into the scalp areas where the hair is thinning.
Is PRP Safe
Side effects of this therapy are very low due to the fact that the own patient’s blood is used. There may be slight soreness at the injection site, but this is alleviated with an over the counter pain medication. The patient will be able to drive themselves home and resume normal activities immediately after the treatment.
How Many Treatments Are Needed for Results
The number of treatments will vary based on individual needs. Some patients need 2 to 4 treatments per year to maintain the growth stage.
Who Is a Good Candidate for PRP
Again, PRP is not a cure for genetic baldness, but the treatment can slow down the hair loss process. Give us a call at the Institute of Anti-aging if you would like a free consultation on this treatment option and to find out if it is right for you.
